Naomie Harris on Filming Black Bag with Regé-Jean Page: “We Got Comfortable Instantly”

 

Naomie Harris and Regé-Jean Page quickly got to know each other while filming Black Bag, Steven Soderbergh’s latest spy thriller.

“The first scene I had with Regé was actually a love scene,” Harris shares. “So it was basically like, ‘Hi, nice to meet you. Now let’s get into bed together.’”

Despite the potentially awkward situation, Page made the experience comfortable. “He’s incredibly generous as a performer,” she says. “He has a great sense of humor, and he’s also very sensitive and considerate. Just a genuinely kind person. So it was no problem at all.”

Page even reached out beforehand to ensure Harris felt at ease. “He called me and asked, ‘Would you like an intimacy coordinator? And if at any point you feel uncomfortable, just let me know,’” she recalls. “I told him, ‘No, I feel totally comfortable with you. It’s really fine.’”

While intimate scenes can be intimidating, Harris later discovered that the one they filmed didn’t make the final cut. “It’s always a little nerve-wracking to meet someone and then immediately jump into a scene like that—but in the end, it was removed from the movie,” she explains. “Steven decided, ‘No, no, no. You’ll both be clothed and just having a conversation.’ I was like, ‘Oh, okay. Great.’”

In Black Bag, Harris and Page portray colleagues and lovers working for a British spy agency. Their character’s teammate, played by Michael Fassbender, is assigned to uncover whether his wife—who is also a spy, played by Cate Blanchett—is responsible for a security breach. The film’s cast also includes Pierce Brosnan, Marisa Abela, and Tom Burke.

Harris was captivated by the script’s complexity. “I was completely caught off guard by the twists,” she admits. “I loved that every character was fully developed and had their own hidden agenda.”

She also appreciated how the story kept her guessing. “I couldn’t figure out who was betraying who until the very end. I loved all the mystery and intrigue.”

Another aspect she enjoyed? The film’s efficient storytelling. “There aren’t many sexy, sophisticated films that also tell a great story in just 90 minutes. You don’t have to sit there for three-plus hours, which I definitely appreciate!”
