Sagal admitted that for nearly three decades, she avoided dealing with difficult emotions. “I numbed myself rather than facing life’s challenges,” she explained. “Losing my parents, battling cancer in my 20s—I didn’t process any of it. Instead, I turned to drugs and alcohol.”
She acknowledged that overcoming addiction forced her to confront life head-on. “Once I stopped self-medicating, I had no choice but to deal with everything.”

During the discussion, Sagal related her struggles to those of Applegate and Sigler, both of whom are battling multiple sclerosis. She explained that addiction, much like chronic illness, makes one deeply aware of mortality.

Sagal revealed that substance abuse nearly destroyed her music career. “I sabotaged myself,” she admitted. “Looking back, I see how I burned opportunities. You can’t show up to a gig under the influence, and sometimes I did.”
Despite setbacks, she has since rebuilt her music career, releasing two albums and recording a song for the Sons of Anarchy soundtrack.
Parenting and Open Conversations About Alcohol
Now a mother of three, Sagal maintains an open dialogue with her youngest daughter, Esme, 18, especially as she prepares for college.
“We talk a lot about avoiding drugs, and she’s grown up in a home without alcohol,” Sagal explained. “Before she leaves for college, we plan to introduce her to alcohol in a safe environment. We’d rather her first experience not be at a frat party.”
